Poultry Farming

About This Project

When Arun, one of our field coordinators,  asked her age ,she barely could answer.  All that she knew about her age was , she was “older than 60 years.”

Parbati Neupane is a 62 year old single mother living now in the Hatdanda village of Dolakha district, one of the districts hit hardest by the recent earthquake in Nepal.

After her husband passed away, Parbati was working as a non-tenured teacher in a local government school. Her only son was working in Pokhara, in the western part of Nepal. She left her job at the request of her son, who convinced her that he would be taking care of her. She moved to Pokhara to be with her son. But circumstances changed. She was left on her own by her son after 3-4 months.

After being abandoned by her son, she returned back to her village and was left with no means to support herself. The job that she had with the local school was given to someone else. Now she is physically too weak to work for someone.

She walked hours to meet Arun. She heard about the Yang-Ward Foundation and its work with single women in rural Nepal. So she personally walked down the mountain to meet Arun, where she expressed her interest in starting poultry farming to support herself.

Yang-Ward Foundation bought her chickens and other necessary equipment for poultry farming. Arun,  along with other  local residents, helped her to set up the poultry house. She is thrilled and excited to begin her own poultry farm, a dream that she had for years.
